Offer Description
Project title: Evaluation of the use of biocompounds to fight the colonisation of heritage materials by biodeteriorating microorganisms under different climatic conditions.
Objectives: This project aims to develop innovative tools, strategies, and guidelines that mitigate the detrimental effects of water related biodeterioration of building, ensuring the long-term preservation of our valuable cultural heritage. In this PhD the objective is to develop innovative treatments based on biocompounds to combat microbial colonisation of materials. This includes a case study on a cave church, the evaluation of single and cocktail‑derived active ingredients of natural origin, the formulation of ready‑to‑use products, and the development of application processes. The goal is to reduce the toxicity of restoration processes for historical monuments that combat biodeterioration, thereby improving both the environmental impact and the health of restorers.
Skills developed: environmental sampling, on-site colorimetry, molecular analysis of microbial diversity, laboratory microbiological techniques, antimicrobial treatments, microscopy (electron, confocal laser scanning, optical).
