Offer Description
Electrochemical CO2 reduction (CO2RR) is a promising approach to convert CO2 into valuable fuels and chemicals, contributing to renewable energy storage and carbon neutrality. While efficient molecular catalysts exist for the production of simple C1 products (e.g., CO, formate), accessing more reduced C1 compounds (e.g., methane, methanol) and multicarbon (C2+) products remains a major challenge.
This project aims to develop innovative homo- and heterodinuclear molecular catalysts based on porphyrin and phthalocyanine platforms to promote CO2 reduction beyond current limitations. By exploiting metal–metal cooperativity, the project seeks to enable tandem reactivity, facilitating C–C bond formation and deeper reduction pathways.
The research will involve:
- Design and synthesis of dinuclear macrocyclic ligands (done by the German partner)
- Preparation and characterization of multimetallic complexes (done by the German partner and UGA)
- Electrochemical studies of CO2 reduction (done by UGA)
- Mechanistic investigations (spectroscopic and electrochemical)(done by UGA)
- Immobilization of catalysts on carbon-based materials (e.g., CNTs) for heterogeneous applications (done by UGA)
The project is carried out in collaboration with a German partner, combining complementary expertise in ligand design and CO2 electrocatalysis.
