This position is based at our Luxembourg headquarters and requires regular office presence. The EIB offers you the opportunity to live and work in a truly international and multi-cultural environment. We also offer relocation support.

Purpose

The Deep Tech & Digital Unit is responsible for EIB’s direct investment activities aimed at strengthening Europe’s deep tech base. Working alongside leading venture and growth investors, the team originates and directly finances high‑growth, technology-driven companies across sectors including space, defence and dual use, AI, autonomous robotics, semiconductors, quantum technologies. The investments focus on companies whose technologies are critical for Europe’s competitiveness, resilience and strategic autonomy, but which often require significant long‑term, risk‑taking capital to scale. EIB provides equity-type financing tickets typically ranging from EUR 10m to EUR 150m, using a range of equity risk instruments such as venture debt and convertible structures to support Europe’s most promising technology companies through key growth and scale‑up stages.

The successful candidate will contribute to the origination, assessment and execution of these investments. This requires strong analytical judgement, an interest in the underlying technologies, and the ability to work credibly with founders, investors and internal stakeholders to turn strategic investment opportunities into robust financing proposals.

Operating Network

The successful candidate will report to the respective Head of Unit. You will have regular contact with colleagues in EGPF Divisions and Units, as well as other Departments and Directorates. You will collaborate extensively with EIB internal services and external stakeholders, including investors, companies, EU institutions, national promotional banks and other public or institutional partners.

Accountabilities

  • Lead direct equity-type financings across the full investment lifecycle, from origination and initial screening to due diligence, structuring, approval, execution and post‑signature monitoring, taking substantive responsibility from an early stage.
  • Originate investment opportunities by mapping the European deep tech and digital ecosystem, building relationships with founders, venture and growth investors, corporates and public partners, and identifying opportunities aligned with EIB’s strategic priorities.
  • Perform in-depth due diligence on companies, technologies and markets, including assessment of the business model, financial projections, cap table, technology differentiation, competitive positioning, scalability, management team, risk‑return profile and exit logic.
  • Structure transactions using the appropriate equity‑risk instruments (venture debt, convertible, warrants, and other hybrid structures).
  • Prepare investment cases for internal approval, drafting clear, concise, and robust decision‑maker ready materials highlighting the investment thesis, key risks and strategic rationale.
  • Negotiate and execute finance documentation, working closely with internal services and external counsel to ensure that commercial, legal, risk and policy considerations are appropriately reflected.
  • Monitor portfolio companies post‑signature, tracking milestones, financial performance, covenants and key risks, supporting follow‑on financings, amendments or restructurings where relevant, until transfer to Portfolio Management and Monitoring.
  • Contribute to internal knowledge and process streamlining, including sector intelligence, investment methodologies, templates, tools and working practices.
  • Represent the Bank at relevant conferences, sector events and in panels.

Qualifications

  • University degree (minimum an equivalent to a Bachelor) preferably in Finance, Business Administration, Engineering, or a related discipline.
  • Minimum 5 years of relevant professional experience in venture debt, venture and growth capital, private equity, or technology investment banking. Operating experience in a technology sector role would be an advantage.
  • Fluency in financial modelling, the mechanics of equity risk instruments and related legal aspects.
  • Sharp written and verbal communication.
  • Deep tech sector exposure and familiarity with the full spectrum of equity‑risk instruments (venture debt, equity, equity kickers, convertibles, warrants, etc.) would be an advantage.
  • Good understanding of the EIB’s mission, strategic priorities and operating and political framework in which the Bank operates.
  • Excellent knowledge of English and/or French (*), with a good command of the other. Knowledge of other EU languages would be an advantage.
