As a Field Service Engineer (Customer Engineer) you serve as the direct liaison with customers, collaborating closely to install, maintain and upgrade equipment. You'll use digital analytics for troubleshooting and apply basic diagnostic techniques to assess and address technical issues. Your responsibilities include performing preventative and corrective maintenance on electrical, vacuum, mechanical, plasma, hydraulic and gas systems, and coordinating and communicating directly with customers to ensure smooth operations and exceptional service.

Responsibilities

  • Perform independent installation tasks (mechanical assembly, electrical connections, robot calibrations), from integration to inspection of tools, including troubleshooting when issues arise.
  • Follow all checklists and procedures; ensure correct schematics are available before performing work.
  • Test equipment with assistance from senior engineers, existing documentation and diagnostic techniques.
  • Respond to factory issues by communicating with other engineers and participating in escalation conference calls.
  • Participate in continuous improvement projects to reduce installation cycle time and costs.
  • Provide accurate reporting of status, hours worked and non‑conformances.
  • Adhere to the security policy and quality standards of Applied Materials and its customers.

Skills and Experience Required

  • Master’s degree with a technical background (mechanical assembly, equipment installation, maintenance, mechatronics, electronics, electrical, mechanical, or similar).
  • Position open to junior profiles.
  • Strong troubleshooting skills for mechanical and electrical issues during system installation.
  • Ability to communicate daily pass‑downs and equipment status reports.
  • Project management skills to control installation project within budget, timeline and quality requirements.
  • Ability to work autonomously.
  • Good English communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Good knowledge of MS Office (Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Extensive travelling throughout Europe (approx. 75 % of the time).

Physical Requirements

This position often requires extensive walking, standing for extended periods, working in tight spaces, bending, squatting, twisting, kneeling, reaching, climbing stairs and ladders, working at height, lifting up to 35 lbs, distinguishing between colors, and working with electricity. The role typically involves working in a clean room, requiring appropriate personal protective equipment such as coveralls, hoods, booties, safety glasses, gloves, respirators, chemical aprons and face shields. The environment may contain noise that could be difficult for individuals with noise sensitivity.

  • Salary offered will be based on location, hire grade, job‑related knowledge, skills, experience and internal equity. A comprehensive benefits package and potential bonus/stock award program may be available.
  • For sales roles the posted salary range reflects Target Total Cash (TTC) – the sum of base salary and target bonus at 100 % goal achievement.
