India Passive Cooling Expert

Organizational context: The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority. The Climate Change Division, specifically the Cool Coalition under the Cooling and Buildings Unit, aims to accelerate climate mitigation and adaptation. This role supports UNEP's India office and the Mitigation Branch in implementing Cool Coalition workstreams focused on sustainable urban cooling in India.

Job purpose: This role provides crucial technical expertise to support the implementation of sustainable urban cooling initiatives in India, as part of UNEP's India Cooling Programme under the Cool Coalition framework. The purpose is to assist national and subnational governments and real estate developers through technical handholding, research, and the development of knowledge products, tools, guidelines, and training materials. The position contributes to advancing climate mitigation, resilience, air quality, and energy access goals by promoting passive and sustainable cooling solutions within urban environments, aligning with global climate objectives and India's specific needs.

Responsibilities: Provide technical expertise for sustainable urban cooling activities in India, including urban design, passive cooling, and district cooling. Offer direct technical support to subnational governments and real estate developers. Undertake research and develop knowledge products, tools, training materials, and communication pieces. Conduct building energy simulations and develop guidelines for passive cooling. Deliver training sessions and provide handholding support. Assist in the development of funding proposals for cooling initiatives. Support the implementation of UNEP’s India Cooling Programme within the Cool Coalition framework.

Education: An advanced university degree (Masters or equivalent) in Energy Policy, Engineering, Economics, Environmental Sciences, Physics, or a related field is preferred. A first-level university degree with two additional years of relevant experience may be accepted. Fluency in written and oral English is required, along with knowledge of Hindi. Knowledge of another UN language is an advantage.

Work experience: A minimum of eight years of relevant work experience is required, with a focus on energy, cities, and the environment. Practical experience in multi-stakeholder project development, financing, partnership building, and administration, particularly within the sustainable energy sector, is desired. Experience is calculated from the date of the first-level university degree.

Skills: Technical expertise in sustainable urban cooling (urban design, passive cooling, district cooling), research and development of knowledge products, building energy simulations, development of guidelines and training materials, training delivery and handholding, funding proposal development, project management, stakeholder engagement, and communication.
