Background & Job Description
AbbVie Device & Combination Product Development (DCPD) provides design and development expertise to enable drug delivery systems. The Human Factors Center of Excellence (HFCOE) manages the device and user interface design process and performs usability assessments to support regulatory submissions. We are looking for a Human Factors professional to support product development efforts.
Overview of Position
This role supports DCPD HFCOEs by managing projects to design, test, and validate combination products and medical devices. The individual will work with engineering, medical, compliance, and regulatory teams to design device user interfaces and conduct usability studies to ensure ease‑of‑use, safety, customer acceptance, and regulatory approval.
Major Responsibilities
- Determine and lead the human factors engineering strategy for product development projects
- Design and conduct contextual inquiry research
- Perform task and workflow analyses
- Work with System Engineers to develop user needs, requirements, and user interface specifications
- Conduct and evaluate Use‑Related Risk Analyses and recommend design mitigations
- Design device and system user interfaces and associated instructional materials
- Design, conduct, and analyze usability tests, interviews, and surveys
- Prepare thorough documentation for regulatory submissions
- Develop and achieve human factors engineering strategy in alignment with functional goals
- Present human factors engineering concepts and results to scientific and non‑scientific audiences
- Apply innovation by creating alternative or improved approaches for human factors engineering at AbbVie
- Advise and mentor peers, sharing knowledge and expertise to advance the function
- Collaborate with functional experts to integrate objectives into product development activities
Qualifications
- Master’s degree (+14 years related experience) or PhD (+8 years related experience) in Human Factors, Industrial Engineering, Human‑Computer Interaction, Psychology or equivalent
- Strong working knowledge of Human Factors methods and principles
- 8‑10 years experience in user interface design and usability testing
- Proven ability to innovate and deliver new or improved products
- Excellent communication skills, written and spoken
- Strong problem‑solving and analytical skills
- Experience in pharmaceutical or medical device product development preferred
- Working knowledge of medical device regulations and standards preferred
- Willingness to travel up to 20%
