Job Summary
The Human Resources Specialist will manage essential HR operations for the North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics (NCSSM), supporting both the Durham and Morganton campuses. The role involves independently managing the temporary employment lifecycle, advising on classification and compensation, updating internal policies, and recruiting and processing new hires. Additionally, the Specialist coordinates key compliance and screening programs, including background checks, FMLA leave tracking, employment verifications, and the DOT/FMCSA CDL drug testing program, ensuring adherence to federal, state, UNC System, and OSHR regulations. The position is eligible for a hybrid work arrangement, balancing remote work and on‑campus presence.
Responsibilities
- Manage the temporary employment lifecycle including advising departments on classification and compensation.
- Update internal HR policies and procedures.
- Recruit, screen, and process new hires, ensuring compliance with employment laws.
- Coordinate compliance and screening programs (background checks, FMLA leave tracking, employment verifications, DOT/FMCSA CDL drug testing).
- Ensure adherence to federal, state, UNC System, and OSHR regulations.
- Support the hybrid work arrangement implementation.
Qualifications and Experience
- Two or more years of general HR experience with a proven track record of processing personnel actions.
- Experience navigating federal compliance (e.g., I‑9, background checks, CDL regulations) and applying complex policies.
- High‑level proficiency using core software tools (Google Workspace, MS Office, Excel) and web‑based HR data systems.
- Preference given to experience with State of North Carolina HR systems (Fiori, Workday).
- Strong problem‑solving skills and ability to work independently and exercise sound judgment.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills and ability to convey information across stakeholders.
- Proven ability to build effective working relationships with employees, managers, and the public.
- Knowledge of academic environments is preferred.
Minimum Education and Experience
Graduation from a four‑year college or university; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
