Position

Global Head, Medical Strategy, Operations & Governance

Lead a team and serve as a key member of the Medical Leadership Team. Head strategic initiatives to transform the Medical function into a best‑in‑class service across Oncology, Neuroscience, and Rare Diseases. Collaborate closely with R&D, commercial, legal, IT, Quality, and corporate communications to align development with overall company strategy. Act as a liaison to senior management and external health‑care professionals, supporting the CMO and MLT on strategy, prioritisation, and decision‑support.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide strategic direction for the Medical Roadmap and support the development and execution of the Medical Leadership Team and CMO strategies.
  • Build relationships across the CMO department, develop a high‑performance MLT team, and foster an integrated Global Medical department.
  • Lead and contribute to CMO transformation, drive change management within the Global Medical group, and align with other divisions.
  • Chair MLT meetings, ensure accurate minutes and actions, and structure off‑site meetings to address key topics.
  • Work with the CMO EA to schedule and prioritise MLT meetings and with the CMO and MLT to ensure goals are understood, delegated, and staff are held accountable.
  • Ensure initiatives are executed successfully and work with CMO Communications to maintain effective internal and external communication.
  • Support project management for the Asset Medical Strategy, coordinate medical teams, manage project timelines, milestones, and budgets.
  • Oversee budgeting, LRP, F1/F2 for therapeutic areas, monitor budget performance, identify cost‑saving opportunities, and ensure financial transparency.
  • Lead and oversee multiple concurrent medical affairs projects, mitigating risks and ensuring adherence to timelines and objectives.
  • Oversee medical governance: planning, prioritising, tracking, and reporting on medical activities, including due diligence on acquisitions and cross‑functional projects.
  • Govern data generation: review and approval of CSSs, IS/NIS, ISS, PSPs, and other evidence‑generation studies.
  • Identify, harmonise, and optimise SOPs, policies, and guidance documents for strategic medical programs.
  • Review governance frameworks periodically, ensuring they remain fit for purpose and support accountable decision making.
  • Ensure compliance with constitutional and regulatory requirements and oversee ethics, risk, and complex scientific matters.
  • Coordinate regular communication across the global medical community, establishing simple escalation processes and clear responsibilities.
  • Lead field medical strategy: oversee the Medical Science Liaison (MSL) function, align the MSL model and capabilities with scientific and patient‑impact ambitions, and coach the Global Head of Field Medical.
  • Hold ultimate accountability for ethics, compliance, and risk across all Medical and Field Medical activities.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Advanced degree in Medicine (MD) or Life Sciences; additional business or management qualifications desirable.
  • 10+ years of experience in medical affairs, clinical development, or a related field within the healthcare or pharmaceutical industry.
  • Proven leadership experience, preferably in a global or regional capacity.
  • Strong strategic thinking, analytical, and problem‑solving skills.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

Education, Experience & Skills

  • Progressive experience in the pharmaceutical or biotechnology industry, with a strong focus on Medical Affairs.
  • Ability to ensure all Medical Affairs activities comply with regulatory and ethical standards.
  • Proficiency in project‑management methodologies and tools for complex, cross‑functional projects.
  • Strong organisational and prioritisation skills to meet deadlines.
  • Collaborative ability with cross‑functional teams including MSLs, clinical development, regulatory affairs, and commercial teams.
  • Exceptional attention to detail in budget management, documentation, and project planning.
  • A genuine passion for improving patient lives through scientific innovation.
