Job Description: Under general supervision, the Paramedic engages in emergency medical services to protect life; operates and maintains medical equipment and apparatus; provides advanced life support pre‑hospital care; maintains facilities; performs related work as required.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Performs complex diagnostic and medical procedures such as intravenous cannulation, endotracheal intubation, recognition of cardiac arrhythmias and administration of drugs (daily, ~50% of time).
- Comprehends and documents patient histories (daily, ~20%).
- Checks drugs and equipment daily to ensure proper control and inventory (daily, ~5%).
- Drives and maintains apparatus (daily, ~5%).
- Clean and test equipment (daily, ~5%).
- Perform basic maintenance of vehicles (weekly, ~5%).
- Operate radio‑telephone equipment as required (daily, ~10%).
- Clean and maintain station facilities and quarters (daily, ~15%).
- Explain Fire Department rules, regulations and procedures (monthly, ~5%).
- Subject to emergency recall during non‑duty hours (annual, ~1%).
- Operate fire station computers (daily, ~20%).
- Perform any other related duties as required or assigned.
Education and Experience
Knowledge of a specialized field, equivalent of four years in high school plus night, trade extension, or correspondence school specialized training, equal to two years of college, plus 2 years related experience and/or training, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Skills
- Communication – effectively communicate information and respond to questions in person‑to‑person and small group situations with customers, clients, general public and other employees.
- Mathematical – ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume.
- Critical Thinking – solve practical problems and deal with a variety of known variables where only limited standardization exists; interpret a variety of instructions.
Required Certifications
- Maintain state‑mandated continuing education for Paramedic Certification, including current American Heart Association (AHA) certification in Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS), or equivalent.
Preferred Certifications
- AA/AS in Paramedic Science
- Pre‑Hospital Trauma Life Support Certification

$51,932 – $55,178 DOE
