The Legal Aid Society's Civil Practice offers unpaid internship positions in various NYC borough offices and specialized units for Fall 2026.

Legal interns assist Civil Practice attorneys who work to improve the lives of low‑income New Yorkers by helping vulnerable families and individuals obtain and maintain basic necessities—housing, health care, food, and subsistence income or self‑sufficiency. Attorneys address a full range of legal issues including anti‑eviction, domestic violence, family law, immigration, employment, tax, health, elder law, HIV/AIDS, and consumer law.

Essential Duties

  • Draft motions, pleadings, memoranda of law, and affidavits.
  • Conduct legal research.
  • Attend court and administrative hearings with attorneys.
  • Assist with client interviews.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Current 2L or 3L law school student in good standing.
  • Relevant clinical program or work experience (not required).
  • Demonstrated commitment to serving racially and socioeconomically oppressed communities.
  • Ability to work collegially and collaboratively with all staff members.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks, deadlines, and think critically.
  • Fluency in a language other than English, especially Spanish, is helpful (but not required).

Benefits and Compensation

As an unpaid internship, there is no salary. Interns may be eligible for financial assistance, public‑interest funding, or academic credit through their law school. The internship may also qualify for pro bono credit.

Interns may also qualify for the Howard Rossbach and Mary Boresz Pike Stipend programs administered by the Legal Aid Society. Eligibility criteria include enrollment as a law student at an accredited institution, acceptance into a LAS program, demonstration of financial need, and lack of funding.
