Environmental Compliance Specialist
The North Slope Borough (NSB) is seeking an Environmental Compliance Specialist to support compliance with RCRA, CWA, and other state and federal regulations.
Responsibilities
- Perform daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly, and annual inspections of NSB tanks, facilities, and related activities.
- Assist in implementing compliance measures required by EPA, DEC, and other regulatory agencies.
- Investigate complaints and suspected violations, including illegal dumping.
- Develop and submit annual waste manifest and inventory reports.
- Verify that hazardous chemicals are handled, stored, and disposed of in accordance with regulations.
- Coordinate with NSB departments to promote environmental compliance.
- Travel to Utqiagvik and off‑slope locations as needed.
- Perform any additional duties assigned.
Qualifications
- High school diploma, GED, or a combination of 12 years of education and related work experience.
- Basic knowledge of and passion for keeping the environment clean, fostering a strong environmental ethic among staff.
- Basic knowledge of data entry and organization.
- Basic understanding of inspection techniques, including phone photography, documentation, observation, and reporting.
- Effective written and oral communication skills with staff, industry, and government.
- Willingness to learn and adapt to new responsibilities.
- Valid Alaska driver’s license meeting North Slope Borough insurance criteria.
Training
- Resources Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) training required within 3 months of hire.
- Additional environmental training to be completed within 6 months of hire.
