Engineering Manager, MAAS

Join the Canonical team as an Engineering Manager for MAAS (Metal as a Service). Canonical is a leading open‑source software company that builds Ubuntu, a platform used worldwide for cloud, AI, IoT and enterprise applications. With over 1,200 colleagues in more than 80 countries, Canonical delivers highly scalable, cloud‑ready server distributions and advanced data centre technologies.

As an Engineering Manager, you will drive the evolution of MAAS, a rapidly growing software stack written in Python and Go that provisions bare‑metal infrastructure via a cloud‑style API. You will lead a distributed team of engineers, set strategy, and deliver high‑quality software that powers Canonical’s flagship data centre products.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead a geographically distributed team of engineers, organising work by time‑zone and coaching to deliver robust solutions.
  • Talent development: mentor, coach, give career feedback, and plan career paths for team members.
  • Collaborate cross‑functionally with senior management and external stakeholders to align engineering strategy and execution.
  • Advocate modern software development practices, champion engineering culture, and participate in code and architectural reviews.
  • Engage with Canonical’s open‑source community, partners, and internal teams (cloud‑init, LXD, public cloud offerings).
  • Travel internationally to internal and external global events (4‑6 weeks per year).

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) in Computer Science or related field.
  • Proven experience delivering software using Python, Go, or similar languages.
  • Technical leadership experience; deep familiarity with Linux on physical servers, storage, and networking.
  • Experience with modern Linux cloud computing technologies (Kubernetes, containers, networking, storage).
  • Strong communication skills with professional written and spoken English.
  • Agile software development methodology experience and ability to mentor teammates.
  • Result‑oriented, personal drive to meet commitments, and willingness to travel internationally up to twice a year.

Nice‑to‑Have Skills

  • Front‑end skills (TypeScript, React, Angular, Svelte, Vue).
  • Data centre infrastructure management and design expertise.
