Engineering Manager Hands-on - Subscription

Back Market is a global marketplace for refurbished devices. We aim to make tech reliable, affordable, and better than new, with a mission to reduce environmental impact by providing trustworthy, affordable tech with 92% less carbon emissions than buying new. Our technology department, the Bureau of Technology (BoT), includes more than 30 product teams supported by a Platform group with over 10 cross-cutting teams. We also have specialized groups focused on security, backend, frontend, AI, and mobile to foster collaboration and continuous learning.

We created the TLM (Tech Lead Manager) or Engineering Manager hands-on role at Back Market to scale teams while maintaining technical excellence and mentorship. As a TLM, you will lead technical delivery across our subscription platform, Services hub, and payment systems, collaborating with multiple engineering teams to extend device life and support the circular economy.

What you’ll do

• Lead a collaborative team (approximately 5 people) in delivering high-quality software that users will love.
• Collaborate with the product engineering department to align the team with company objectives across engineering and the broader business.
• Build roadmaps that balance long-term strategic initiatives with short-term tactical bets aligned to the company’s strategy and team growth.
• Demonstrate a broad understanding of our global architecture and how your domains fit within it.
• Develop people through ongoing coaching and mentoring.
• Create a team environment where members feel supported and value belonging.
• Establish open communication and a culture of feedback within the team.
• Operate in an agile "build it and run it" environment, delivering, launching, monitoring, and supporting owned components.
• Support your team in increasing delivery proficiency by fostering a learning environment.

• Experience in agile development with knowledge of our tech stack: AWS, Kubernetes, Docker, RESTful API, Python, Django, Vue.js, Nuxt, Datadog, etc.

• Strong verbal and written English communication skills.
• Curiosity about the industry, our impact on customers, and the world.

Technical environment

Applicants may encounter the following technologies in our environment:

• Application: Python (FastAPI / SQLAlchemy / Celery) and Django (being phased out) and Golang.
• Data: PostgreSQL / Redis / Kafka / RabbitMQ / BigQuery.
• Infrastructure: GCP / Kubernetes (GKE) / Docker / Datadog / ArgoCD / CircleCI / GitHub.

Recruitment process

• Call with a Tech Talent Advisor (45 minutes).
• Leadership principles interview with two Engineering Managers (60 minutes).
• Coding and testing module (45 minutes).
