Data Department
The Data department oversees all of Agoda’s data‑related requirements. Our ultimate goal is to enable and increase the use of data in the company through creative approaches and powerful resources such as operational and analytical databases, queue systems, BI tools, and data science technology. Role Overview
As an Engineering Manager, Backend/Data at Agoda, you will lead a team of talented engineers in building and scaling robust backend and data platforms that power critical products and services. This role involves designing distributed systems, data pipelines, and high‑throughput, low‑latency services, ensuring reliability, scalability, security, and operational excellence. You will also work on fintech‑related platforms and transaction‑heavy systems such as payments, financial operations, and other business‑critical flows requiring accuracy, resilience, and performance.
Responsibilities
- Lead a high‑performing engineering team while staying hands‑on with coding, code reviews, and technical guidance.
- Coach engineers through technical problem‑solving, design discussions, and day‑to‑day development.
- Architect scalable, reliable, and maintainable systems in a high‑traffic, data‑intensive environment.
- Drive engineering across backend services, infrastructure, performance, data, client‑facing systems, and fintech‑related platform capabilities.
- Own production systems, including operational health, scalability, reliability, maintainability, and security.
- Shape engineering best practices across software design, architecture, testing, system operations, and secure engineering.
- Develop people through mentoring, feedback, and career growth support.
- Hire and scale strong engineering talent.
- Partner with cross‑functional stakeholders to deliver impactful business, product, and platform outcomes.
- Use data‑driven decision making to improve team effectiveness and delivery.
Requirements
- Strong hands‑on coding ability in at least one language such as Java, Scala, or C#.
- Experience in systems architecture and scalable, fault‑tolerant distributed systems.
- Experience as a system owner with operational responsibility for production services.
- Knowledge of lower‑level engineering concepts such as garbage collection, threading, and context switching.
- Exposure to automation, CI/CD, and Agile/Scrum within a DevOps culture.
- Good understanding of application security and secure engineering practices.
- Leadership of engineering teams with 5+ direct reports and a track record of building and developing talent.
- Strong communication and stakeholder management skills, operating with ownership and autonomy.
- Practice data‑driven decision making in delivery and engineering management.
- Ability to operate effectively in environments involving transaction‑heavy, reliability‑sensitive, or fintech‑related systems.
Nice to Have
- Proficiency in more than one programming language.
- Experience with large‑scale distributed systems in high‑growth or high‑traffic environments.
- Exposure to travel tech, e‑commerce, marketplace, or fintech platforms.
- Understanding of data engineering or machine learning team environments.
- Prior experience hiring and scaling teams rapidly.
- Experience working on payments, financial systems, or other transaction‑focused platforms.
