As an Engineering Manager , you will lead two full-stack web product squads (4–6 engineers in total), working closely with their Product Managers and Product Designers. You will own both the people and the delivery across both teams, and play a critical role in building products that help millions of learners engage more effectively with education. You will work at the intersection of people, product and engineering , with a strong focus on impact, pragmatism and long-term sustainability. Championing a high-bar engineering culture and a relentless focus on quality is at the heart of this role : you set and uphold the standards both squads are proud to build by.
Responsibilities
- Grow and support two squads : regular 1:1s, meaningful feedback and career development across both teams.
- Act as a servant leader : remove obstacles, protect focus and clarify priorities for both teams.
- Co‑own each squad’s roadmap with their respective Product Managers and Product Designers, balancing user impact, technical health and delivery commitments.
- Ensure predictable, high‑quality delivery and a healthy, sustainable cadence (agile rituals, metrics, retrospectives), keeping both squads aligned and avoiding silos.
- Champion engineering culture and a high quality bar (the core of this role) : uphold standards for code quality, testing, code review, observability and security‑by‑design, keep a strong full‑stack technical understanding, challenge architecture, and continuously raise the team’s craft while guarding against tech debt.
- Partner with Product and Design and represent both squads in cross‑functional discussions and leadership forums, communicating clearly on progress, risks and outcomes.

- A pragmatic and Lean mindset: simple, effective solutions over over‑engineering, balancing speed, quality and long‑term sustainability.
- A team player who communicates clearly, collaborates easily and actively embraces feedback and learning.
- 7+ years of professional software development experience, including solid full‑stack web experience.
- Previous experience as an Engineering Manager with 3+ years in the role, ideally leading more than one squad.
- Hands‑on background with JavaScript/TypeScript, React and Node.js (or strongly equivalent stacks).
- Experience in a product‑driven, agile environment, collaborating closely with Product and Design.
- Exposure to scale‑up or SaaS product environments.
- Solid understanding of software delivery, CI/CD, cloud infrastructure and security practices.
- Proven ability to prioritise, structure work and lead complex initiatives.
- Fluent in spoken and written English (our working language).
- Knowledge on accessibility is a plus.
