Engineer - Staff - Qualcomm - France
General Summary
Qualcomm's Multimedia R&D and Standards Group is seeking Video Compression Research Engineers. You will be part of a world‑renowned team of video compression experts who develop algorithms, hardware architectures and systems that apply both classical and machine‑learning methods to video compression, video processing, point‑cloud coding and processing, AR/VR and computer‑vision use cases. The successful candidate will be highly self‑directed, creatively analytical and passionate about video‑compression technology, and will work on, but is not limited to, developing new applications of classical and machine‑learning methods to improve state‑of‑the‑art video codecs.
Responsibilities
- Contribute to the conception, development, implementation, and optimization of new algorithms extending existing techniques and systems to improve video compression.
- Initiate ideas, design and implement algorithms for superior hardware‑encoder performance, including perceptually based bit allocation.
- Develop new algorithms for deep‑learning‑based video‑compression solutions.
- Represent Qualcomm in standard‑setting forums such as JVET, MPEG Video and ITU‑T/VCEG.
- Document and present new algorithms and implementations in various forms – standards contributions, patent applications, conference and journal publications, presentations, etc.
- Apply machine‑learning knowledge to extend training or runtime frameworks or model‑efficiency software tools with new features and optimisations.
- Model, architect and develop machine‑learning hardware (co‑designed with software) for inference or training solutions.
- Develop optimized software to enable AI models deployed on hardware (e.g. machine‑learning kernels, compiler tools, or model‑efficiency tools) to leverage specific hardware features and collaborate with team members for joint design.
- Assist with the development and application of machine‑learning techniques into products and/or AI solutions to enable customers to do the same.
- Develop, adapt or prototype complex machine‑learning algorithms, models, or frameworks aligned with product proposals or roadmaps with minimal guidance from more experienced engineers.
- Conduct complex experiments to train and evaluate machine‑learning models and/or software independently.
Ideal Candidate Skills & Experience
- Expert knowledge of the theory, algorithms and techniques used in video and image coding.
- Knowledge and experience in video‑compression standards such as ECM, VVC, HEVC, AVC and AV1.
- Experience with deep‑learning structures (CNN, RNN, autoencoders, etc.) and frameworks like TensorFlow / PyTorch.
- Track record of successful research accomplishments demonstrated through published papers or patent applications in video coding or video processing.
- Solid programming and debugging skills in C/C++.
- Strong written and verbal English communication skills, a strong work ethic and the ability to work in a team environment to accomplish common goals.
- Masters or PhD degree with relevant work experience or publications in video compression, video/image processing algorithms, computer vision or machine learning.
Minimum Qualifications
- PhD or Masters degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Physics, Mathematics or similar fields.
- 1+ year of experience with programming languages such as C, C++, MATLAB, etc.
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Systems or related field with 2+ years of hardware, software, services or system engineering experience.
- OR Master’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Systems or related field with 1+ year of relevant engineering experience.
- OR PhD in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Systems or related field.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Systems or related field.
- 2+ years of experience with machine‑learning frameworks (e.g., TensorFlow, Caffe, PyTorch, Keras).
- 2+ years of experience in embedded‑system development and optimisation for a specific ML problem domain (e.g., NLP, multimedia).
- 2+ years of experience with one or more programming languages suitable for machine learning (e.g., Python, R, C, C++).
- 2+ years of experience using statistics and probability (e.g., conditional probability, Bayes rule).
- 2+ years of experience working in a large matrixed organization.
- 1+ year of experience with low‑level interactions between operating systems (Linux, Android, QNX) and hardware.
- 1+ year of work experience in a role requiring interaction with senior leadership (e.g., Director and above).
