Electronics Technician I - Traffic Services

Description of Work

This position provides technical work in the installation, repair, and maintenance of a wide variety of electrical and electronic equipment with emphasis on traffic control equipment and related devices for Division 3. Duties include installing traffic signal equipment, wiring detectors, installing and wiring controllers, tracing electrical wiring diagrams to locate trouble, dismantling and reassembling components, and replacing worn or faulty parts. Work will be performed without constant supervision and will be evaluated by the supervisor for efficient use of time and proper operation of Traffic Control Systems repaired and maintained.

Skills include general knowledge of safe and efficient use of tools, materials and test equipment used in electrical/electronic trade, ability to diagnose source of equipment failures, and ability to repair or maintain a wide variety of complex electrical equipment. The Electronics Technician is expected to maintain proper records of all signal work accomplished and keep accurate records of time worked and all materials used via computer.

Additional Expectations

Employees must possess the ability to lift up to 80+ pounds and shoulder high, use and operate an aerial bucket truck up to 50+ feet in height without accommodations. Perform assigned tasks, understand and follow oral and written instructions, comply with all safety rules and policies to maintain a safer work environment. Manual and physical labor involved in the installation and removal of traffic signals and other traffic control devices. Work in environmental conditions including extreme cold and excessive heat, exposure to noise, dust, asphalt, traffic and heavy construction. Position is subject to emergency callback and overtime and may require non‑traditional work hours including weekends, holidays, nights, and times of emergency.

License and Driver Requirements

The selected candidate must be able to legally operate CDL‑required equipment/trucks with both manual and automatic transmissions at the time of hire or within 360 days of hire date. Either possession of a current Class “A” Commercial Driver’s License on the date of hire, or a Class “A” Commercial Driver’s License must be obtained through completion of on‑the‑job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations within 360 days of the date of hire. Speakers must meet the standards below:

• No more than two convictions of moving violations within the past three years. No convictions of an alcohol or drug‑related traffic offense within the past five years.
• Valid, current North Carolina driver’s license appropriate for the type of vehicle to be operated.
• Drivers possessing an out‑of‑state license in the past ten years must provide driving records from the appropriate states.
• Pre‑employment drug testing is required.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities / Competencies

• Knowledge of standard test equipment used to diagnose electronic components.
• Experience reading and understanding schematic drawings and wiring diagrams.
• Knowledge of the National Electric Code.
• Demonstrated ability to plan, schedule, and carry out work assignments effectively with minimal technical supervision.
• Experience performing manual and physical labor in varied environmental conditions.

Minimum Education and Experience

Associate’s degree in electronics from an accredited institution and one year of experience in the repair and maintenance of a variety of specialized electronic devices, preferably including some responsibility for circuit modification; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Appropriate licensure may be required by the governing board or commission.
