Dow Jones is building WSJ Sports Intelligence as a premium news and information business for the people who own, invest in, operate and advise the global sports industry — combining trusted journalism with a broader platform of newsletters, events, data, analysis and network.

About the Role

The Editor Europe & Middle East will lead that build‑out across one of the most strategically important regions in the global sports economy. This role will own the editorial development of our Europe and Middle East coverage — especially around media rights, club and league economics, ownership, institutional and sovereign capital, technology, and the changing power structure of global sport. This role is critical to establishing WSJ’s authority in the business of sport. It is also a builder role. Year 1 is about building the regional spine of the franchise: setting the coverage agenda, defining priority beats, building source networks, and helping define how Sports Intelligence interfaces with the core WSJ newsroom in Europe and the Middle East. The steady‑state matters, but the build is the job. The role will work closely with WSJ editorial leadership and Consumer leadership to ensure the coverage is coordinated with the broader Journal report, aligned to WSJ standards, and built for the same decision‑maker audience WSJ already serves across money, business and power.

Responsibilities

• Lead WSJ Sports Intelligence coverage across Europe and the Middle East, building a clear regional lens on the business of sport rather than general fan coverage.
• Own and evolve priority beats in the region, including European soccer, media and technology, rights, ownership, investment, and adjacent categories that shape the economics of global sport.
• Break agenda‑setting stories and develop sharper analysis that helps investors, owners, advisers and operators understand where value is moving and why.
• Build and maintain top‑tier source relationships across clubs, leagues, banks, private capital, sovereign investors, advisers, media companies and the wider sports ecosystem.
• Help design a regional coverage plan that complements — rather than duplicates — broader WSJ sports reporting, with regular coordination between Sports Intelligence and the core newsroom.
• Extend the journalism into larger franchises over time, including newsletters, live conversations, video, event programming and premium intelligence products.
• Serve as a visible in‑market leader for the franchise, helping establish WSJ Sports Intelligence as a credible destination for the people shaping the next phase of the sports economy.

Qualifications

• 10+ years of journalism experience at a top‑tier publication, with a strong track record covering the business of sport and deep experience across global leagues, European football, media rights, deal‑making and the financial architecture of the industry.
• Deep fluency in finance and business journalism, with the ability to translate complex ownership, valuation, investment and strategy stories into clear, consequential reporting.
• Credibility with senior sources across Europe and the Middle East, including club executives, league leaders, bankers, investors, advisers and media operators.
• Strong editorial judgment and a clear sense for the distinction between trade reporting, investor intelligence and broader WSJ‑quality journalism.
• Ability to operate as both a builder and an editor — helping shape a new franchise, define beats, test formats and establish standards from the ground up.
• Comfort working in a matrixed environment spanning newsroom leadership, consumer ventures, product, audience and events.
• Strong instincts for where journalism can expand into larger franchises — newsletters, video, events, peer networks and premium intelligence products.
• Based in London, with a global view of the sports market and the ability to connect regional reporting to a broader international audience and business opportunity.
