Help shape a modern, integrated approach to player health and performance at one of France’s most historic football clubs.

AS Saint-Étienne are looking to appoint a First Team Doctor to join the club’s Performance Department and take responsibility for the medical care of the Men’s First Team.

This is a key appointment as ASSE continues to develop its performance and medical structure. The successful candidate will combine outstanding clinical and sports medicine expertise with a modern, collaborative approach to performance.

This is deliberately not a traditional standalone club doctor position . The First Team Doctor will be embedded within the multidisciplinary Performance Team, working every day alongside physical performance, physiotherapy, nutrition, psychology and coaching staff to make informed decisions around player health, availability, rehabilitation and performance.

Following the retirement of the club’s long-standing doctor, this appointment represents an opportunity for the successful candidate to help shape the next chapter of medical provision at AS Saint-Étienne and contribute to the integrated environment the club is building.

The impact you’ll make

• Take responsibility for First Team medical care , providing diagnosis, treatment and ongoing management of player injury and illness.
• Provide pitch-side medical leadership , covering training sessions and home and away fixtures, including emergency and immediate-care provision.
• Play an active role in player availability and return-to-play decisions , working alongside physiotherapy and physical performance staff to integrate clinical judgement with loading, conditioning and performance considerations.
• Lead medical screening , including pre-season, periodic and transfer medicals in line with LFP, FFF and UEFA requirements.
• Provide diagnostic musculoskeletal ultrasound , with in-house ultrasound forming an important part of the club’s first-line assessment and triage process.
• Coordinate specialist care and external referrals , working with imaging providers, surgeons and the club’s established local hospital network.
• Bring the medical perspective into daily performance conversations , contributing to decisions around fatigue, illness, sleep, load-related risk and modified training.
• Work closely with nutrition and psychology , recognising the wider biopsychosocial factors that influence player health, injury and rehabilitation.
• Lead medical governance and best practice , ensuring compliance with LFP, FFF, UEFA, FIFA and anti-doping requirements.
• Help develop medical provision across the club , providing oversight and support to the wider doctor network and contributing to consistent standards, protocols and processes.

The First Team Doctor’s clinical expertise will be highly valued and, at times, decisive. Equally, the club wants someone who embraces shared decision-making and recognises that managing an elite footballer involves balancing clinical evidence, performance demands, player welfare and risk.

You will join an established performance structure with a Head Physiotherapist and four physiotherapists bringing different areas of expertise , alongside physical performance, nutrition and psychology. The club describes the current collaboration between physiotherapy and physical performance as particularly strong, and the next doctor will be expected to complement and strengthen that environment.

There is also strong clinical infrastructure around the role. Diagnostic ultrasound is available within the doctor’s office for first-line triage, while the club has an established relationship with a hospital located close to the training ground, providing access to external imaging and specialist medical services when required.

Your skills and experience

We are looking for an experienced sports medicine professional who combines clinical credibility with a progressive, team-first approach .

You will bring:

• A recognised qualification in Sports and Exercise Medicine , or an internationally recognised equivalent.
• Significant experience providing medical care within professional or elite-level football, or another comparable elite sport .
• Experience and/or qualifications in diagnostic musculoskeletal ultrasound .
• Current emergency/immediate-care certification appropriate to an elite pitch-side environment.
• Strong knowledge of WADA/AFLD anti-doping regulations and TUE processes.
• Demonstrable experience working within a genuinely multidisciplinary performance environment .
• The confidence to make important clinical decisions while also listening, collaborating and contributing effectively to shared decision-making.
• The ability to communicate complex medical information clearly to players, coaches and non-medical colleagues.
• Fluency in French and strong working proficiency in English.
• High professional integrity, discretion and the ability to remain calm and decisive in high-pressure situations.

A FIFA Diploma in Football Medicine or equivalent football-specific qualification, experience of injury surveillance and benchmarking, and previous responsibility for developing or mentoring medical staff would be advantageous.
