International Governance and Control sits within International Card Services (ICS) which comprises all the issuing functions across all 28 international markets excluding the US. Colleagues operate across a variety of geographies and disciplines. The organization issues products to Consumer and Commercial customers and is part of the global growth strategy for American Express.

Role Summary

The objective of the IGS Control Management Legal Entity France Market Team is to provide specialized and strategic operational risk advisory. The director will lead a diverse team of high‑performing professionals focused on ensuring control management is embedded in day‑to‑day operations.

Responsibilities

  • Provide strategic and operational risk advice to ensure effective identification, quantification, communication and management of aggregate risks.
  • Compile best practices from product launches and change management, and support risk identification through the change lifecycle.
  • Develop and maintain robust relationships, becoming a trusted 1st Line of Defence partner to facilitate cross‑functional collaboration and enhancement of the control environment.
  • Execute reporting and governance of controls, policies, issue management and operational risk metrics, offering senior management insights into controls effectiveness.
  • Assess the needs of business leaders to ensure understanding of operational risk management and controls.
  • Coordinate with product development and service delivery to embed ORM considerations into product lifecycle and ongoing operations.
  • Facilitate risk awareness and education within teams to enhance risk management capabilities.

Required Qualifications

  • 6+ years experience in operational risk management (e.g., Risk or Internal Audit) and understanding of the operational risk lifecycle.
  • Excellent project management, communication and interpersonal skills, with ability to obtain buy‑in from senior business and technology partners.
  • Expertise in process governance, establishing and overseeing robust decision‑making processes aligned with policies, regulatory frameworks, and operational standards.
  • Experience within financial services industry.
  • Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills, with ability to analyze data, identify trends, and evaluate risk scenarios.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Business, Risk Management or related field; advanced degrees or certifications are advantageous.
  • Experience in at least one of the following:
    • Assessing the needs of business unit leaders for operational risk understanding.
    • Compiling and sharing best practices from product launches and change management initiatives.
    • Coordinating with product development and service delivery to embed ORM considerations into product lifecycle and service operations.
    • Facilitating operational risk awareness and education within teams.

Employment Information

Employment eligibility to work in France is required. The company will not pursue visa sponsorship. Offer of employment is conditioned on successful background verification.
