CNRS Biology's mission is to develop and coordinate biological research aimed at deciphering the complexity of living organisms, from atoms to biomolecules, from cells to entire organisms and populations. By targeting the physiological regulation of energy homeostasis, this project directly responds to the CNRS's ambition to bring together interdisciplinary approaches (neurology, nutrition, integrated physiology, chemistry, cognition) to address major societal challenges: healthy ageing, adaptation to modern nutritional environments and prevention of metabolic diseases (obesity, type 2 diabetes, eating disorders). Drawing on the multidisciplinary framework of the CNRS, the recruitment of a junior professorship (CPJ) on this theme will advance fundamental knowledge essential to understanding the molecular, cellular and physiological determinants by which the dialogue between the brain and organs coordinates the adaptive response to environmental changes to maintain energy balance throughout life. This issue is part of a broader vision of neuro-metabolic control of the physiological and pathophysiological aspects associated with metabolic disorders. This approach is also part of a structuring initiative that promotes the emergence of cross-disciplinary projects and consolidates the CNRS's position as a key player in fundamental and translational research in integrative biology.

The junior chair project is fully in line with the scientific strategy of the BFA unit (CNRS/Université Paris Cité), which studies the impact of the nutritional environment on organisms throughout the lifespan.The successful candidate will reinforce the unit's core themes – while developing their own identity – particularly peripheral organ-brain interactions in energy metabolism control and their pathological alterations (obesity, diabetes, eating disorders). His/her program will focus on inter-organ interactions, particularly between the gut and brain via the vagal nervous system, or the study of sensory signals (food odors) and circulating signals (nutrients, hormones) on the regulation of blood sugar and insulin secretion. This project will rely on the expertise of the REGLYS and CO2FEE teams and will benefit from the site's technological platforms, clinical networks and structuring projects (Metabobrain, IHM Neurosciences, DiabetEX).

The scientific project aims to strengthen the leadership position of the BFA laboratory in the field of integrated physiology, in relation to nutrition, the regulation of energy homeostasis, and their pathological disorders. Focusing on the theme of peripheral/brain interactions, the project will explore gut-brain interactions, particularly the role of the vagal and central nervous systems in controlling eating behavior. It will also include the study of sensory signals (food odors) and circulating signals (nutrients, hormones such as incretins) on the regulation of blood sugar and insulin secretion. These two areas can be combined for an integrated approach using preclinical models of diabetes and obesity. The project will be based on a multidisciplinary approach (cellular, molecular and behavioral tools) and will have a translational focus to enhance the clinical impact of the research conducted.

The teaching program focuses on neurophysiology, a major strategic challenge for the teaching and research missions of the Life Sciences Department (SdV). The courses will not only support the teaching of animal physiology, but also ensure continuity and pedagogical quality in several teaching units (UE) at the Bachelor and Master levels, including those taught in English and the new international program 'Advances in Life Sciences'. The courses will cover both general UE (Integrative Animal Biology, Introduction to Neuroscience) and more specialized UE (Brain and Energy Metabolism, Development & Plasticity of the Nervous System). The candidate will supervise students from the BioScience Paris Santé doctoral school (Department of Physiology and Pathology) and will be required to submit their HDR or accreditation to supervise research to the Paris Cité University, if they do not already hold this qualification.

The CNRS is developing a strong policy in favor of open science. Open science consists of making research results "as accessible as possible and closed as necessary". As such, the CNRS aims to make 100% of the texts of publications resulting from the work of its laboratories accessible , in particular through deposit in HAL. The data produced must also be made available and reusable, except for specific restrictions. In addition, the guiding principles of individual evaluation have been revised in accordance with the DORA declaration, to be more qualitative and to take into account all facets of the researcher's profession.

The dissemination of the results will be done through world-class scientific productions: publications, patents, software... In addition, the results will be communicated to various targets such as scientific communities, media, decision makers, general public, schools, etc., with an adapted calendar. Specific tools may be developed such as websites, newsletters, meetings, international symposia, summer schools and conferences.

The relationship between science and society is now recognized as a full dimension of scientific activity. The project will develop this dimension in synergy with all the partners. The resulting research work will contribute to informing public decision-making. Participatory science initiatives may be initiated with actors from the project's socio-economic and cultural eco-system.
