We are currently experiencing exciting growth and seeking a Design Technology Manager that will leverage and elevate design quality, operational performance, and project delivery outcomes.
Role
The Design Technology Manager will lead the firm’s digital practice strategy, innovation agenda, and technology-enabled design delivery. They will integrate people, processes, and technology to establish a scalable digital ecosystem that supports excellence across all project phases. This role ensures BIM and design technology standards are consistent, intuitive, and aligned with long-term firm strategy.
Reporting to the Principals and working in close partnership with IT and BIM Support leadership, this role drives the strategic evolution of RMW’s digital practice, including design technology adoption, automation, visualization, and data-driven workflows. As the firm advances its capabilities in data, AI, and automation, this position provides leadership in defining governance, implementation strategy, and operational integration of these systems.
This is a Hybrid Position with periodic travel to other RMW office locations.
Responsibilities
- Develop and execute a forward-looking digital practice strategy that enhances design quality, delivery reliability, and operational efficiency.
- Evaluate and test emerging technologies (including AI, Generative Design, Large Language Models, and VR/AR), assessing their applicability to architectural workflows and translating viable tools into practical, scalable solutions.
- Design, prototype, and deliver BIM-specific automation solutions that improve automation, efficiency, and consistency firmwide (e.g., templates, Dynamo tools, add-ins, or scripted solutions).
- Establish a strategic vision for AI adoption, identifying scalable opportunities to improve design processes, efficiency, and decision-making.
- Lead and develop the Digital Practice function, providing strategic direction, mentorship, and professional growth for design technology staff.
- Build a high-performing, collaborative digital practice culture that strengthens innovation, accountability, and technical excellence.
- Align digital practice operations with firm priorities through clear communication, governance, and measurable outcomes.
- Foster leadership growth within the team, building capability across Digital Design Managers and technical staff.
- Strategic oversight of the use of BIM/Revit software firm-wide, including installation, configuration, and maintenance.
- Direct BIM governance frameworks, ensuring consistency in model standards, documentation quality, and digital deliverables.
- Establish strategic direction and governance for BIM standards, templates, and software protocols while overseeing BIM Managers responsible for day-to-day administration and maintenance.
- Develop governance frameworks and performance metrics to evaluate, monitor, and continuously improve digital workflows and project delivery quality.
- Cultivate strategic relationships with external industry partners, professional organizations, and peer networks to advance knowledge sharing and innovation.
- Collaborate with BIM support and IT support to develop strategies for using software and software plug-ins to improve efficiencies and company competitiveness.
- Identify, assess, and mitigate risks associated with BIM/VDC workflows, information security, digital project delivery, and client technology requirements to ensure alignment with RMW standards and governance policies.
- Collaborate with project teams to develop digital execution strategies that support design intent and streamline coordination.
- Assess project complexity to design bespoke technology strategies that maximize performance and support lean delivery frameworks.
- Oversee digital project delivery standards and interoperability initiatives to ensure seamless coordination across Revit, Rhino, Navisworks, and related software environments.
- Collaborate with IT on software deployment, infrastructure planning, and hardware requirements to support digital practice needs.
- Lead development of firmwide training programs in collaboration with BIM Support to elevate digital fluency and design technology expertise.
- Oversee onboarding and technical orientation programs for new staff related to BIM standards, tools, and workflows.
- Direct the development and lifecycle management of digital practice resources, including training materials, templates, and workflow documentation.
- Ensure consistent communication and dissemination of new standards and workflows across the organization through structured digital platforms.
Education, Qualifications and Technical Proficiency
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in architecture or a related field preferred.
- Architectural license or equivalent professional certification (e.g., Revit Certified Professional) is preferred.
- 10+ years of progressive leadership experience in design technology within an A/E/C environment.
- Expert‑level proficiency in Autodesk Revit and Autodesk Construction Cloud.
- Strong working knowledge of Rhino, Grasshopper, Enscape, Navisworks, AutoCAD, SketchUp, Lumion, and Adobe Creative Suite.
- Experience with computational design and automation tools such as Dynamo; familiarity with Python or similar scripting languages is highly desirable.
- Demonstrated experience leading BIM strategy, digital practice development, or technology innovation initiatives including kickoff meetings with external consultants and project teams.
- Experience evaluating, implementing, and integrating emerging technologies and software solutions in architectural workflows.
- Experience with AI tools, automation workflows, and architectural software integration.
- Prior experience in BIM management or digital practice leadership roles.
- Exceptional communication and presentation skills with the ability to translate complex technical concepts into clear business and project value.
- Strong leadership presence with the ability to influence across all levels of the organization.
- Highly proactive, organized, and effective in fast‑paced, deadline‑driven environments.
- Proven ability to lead multidisciplinary teams and foster collaboration across technical and design disciplines.
Salary range $125,000 – $165,000 per year.
