Critical Infrastructure Electrical Engineer, Field Engineering
Overview
AWS Infrastructure Services owns the design, planning, delivery, and operation of all AWS global infrastructure. We’re the people who keep the cloud running, supporting all AWS data centers and the servers, storage, networking, power, and cooling equipment that ensure continual access to our customers. You’ll join a diverse team of software, hardware, and network engineers, supply chain specialists, security experts, operations managers, and other vital roles. You’ll collaborate with teams across AWS to deliver high safety and security standards while providing capacity at the lowest possible cost, in an inclusive culture that welcomes bold ideas and empowers you to own them to completion.
As an Amazon Field Engineer, you will provide full life-cycle support to AWS Data Centers from design inception through site improvement and maintenance. This role leads projects to fit out data centers to meet evolving customer needs as we expand our fleet to hyper-scale. You will be excited about a mix of office and field work and have a willingness to visit sites to see things up close.
Key responsibilities
- Be the primary engineering resource for your region when technical advice is needed, engaging with diverse teams to apply your subject matter expertise.
- Perform design and equipment submittal review for new data centers in your region.
- Troubleshoot, conduct Root Cause Analysis (RCA), and create Corrective Action (CA) documentation for site/equipment failures.
- Directly support operational issues with ad-hoc training, complex operating procedure reviews, including critical equipment, and event support.
- Own the conceptual design for existing data center upgrades and design solutions that add capacity, improve availability, increase efficiency, and enhance sustainability.
- Interface with internal teams (operations, design engineering, server hardware, EH&S) to promote standards ensuring consistency and reliability in services delivered.
- Work on concurrent projects, sometimes in multiple geographical regions.
- Initiate and lead engineering audits, including on-site visits, produce reports outlining risks with recommended mitigations and remediation.
- Act as resident engineer during new construction projects and support construction, commissioning, and turnover.
Basic Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent.
- Experience with mission-critical facilities engineering including data centers, power generation, oil & gas facilities (Experienced Engineer).
- Business-level fluency in written and spoken English.
- Willingness to travel between Data Center sites and internationally if required.
Preferred Qualifications
- Data analytics, data querying, scripting skills, and ability to work with large data in evolving environments.
- Direct experience with design, construction, operation, or maintenance of mission-critical facilities, especially data centers.
- Experience as resident engineer or hands-on design consultant/owner’s engineer.
- Knowledge of building codes and regulations; ability to read, interpret, and create construction drawings, specifications, and submittal documents.
- Ability to carry design concepts through exploration, development, and deployment/mass production.
- Understanding of mechanical and/or electrical equipment related to data centers (UPS, generators, switchgear, PDUs, VFDs, ATS, chillers, pumps, cooling towers, CRAHs, fans, economizers, water treatment, etc.).
- EPMS/SCADA/BMS controls system experience (software and/or hardware).
- Business-level fluency in written and spoken French.
