The Role You’ll Play

The Crisis Therapist provides immediate behavioral health assessments, crisis intervention, and short‑term clinical support to individuals experiencing a psychiatric or emotional crisis. This role supports various service areas, primarily coordinating care for clients recently engaged in crisis services. Responsibilities include assessing for acute inpatient hospitalization or other crisis resources, completing crisis assessments for walk‑in clients, co‑responder support for RCPD, mobile crisis assessments, emergent crisis assessments for local ER and Jail facilities, and providing intervention to clients admitted to the Crisis Stabilization Unit. The Crisis Therapist plays a critical role in stabilizing clients, facilitating appropriate level‑of‑care decisions, and connecting individuals to ongoing services.

Essential Responsibilities

  • Conduct comprehensive clinical assessments and inpatient psychiatric evaluations as part of the diagnostic process and crisis intervention.
  • Identify individual needs and diagnose substance use and/or mental health disorders.
  • Assess risk for suicide and other safety concerns; determine medication evaluation and referral needs.
  • Assess individuals under influence or experiencing withdrawal and support stabilization options or in‑house detoxification services.
  • Interpret and communicate relevant information to individuals, families and other stakeholders, effectively under stress.
  • Provide joint response in the field with law enforcement to de‑escalate situations and triage appropriate care; have physical capacity to respond and drive a company vehicle.
  • Aid access to recommended services such as inpatient hospitalization, substance abuse services, outpatient therapy, community services, and other psychiatric services.
  • Complete intakes for clients admitted to the Crisis Stabilization Unit as needed.
  • Complete other specialized evaluations as trained (Comp Evals, PAR/CBST, etc.).
  • Respond to community situations as trained to provide Critical Incident Support.
  • Complete involuntary assessments for those meeting the level‑of‑care need.
  • Attend court hearings for involuntary assessments (within 72 business hours notice).
  • Meet regularly with adult clients admitted to CSU to aid discharge planning.
  • Meet and comply with all administrative and clinical documentation requirements.
  • Attend and actively participate in clinical supervision.
  • Complete and stay up to date on all State of Kansas required trainings and requirements.
  • Perform all other reasonably related duties as assigned.

Requirements

Required

  • A Master’s degree in Social Work, Psychology, Marriage and Family Therapy, Counseling or a closely related field from an accredited institution.
  • Licensed by the Behavioral Sciences Regulatory Board of the State of Kansas and able to meet the statutory definition of Qualified Mental Health Professional.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills using the English language.
  • Basic personal computer skills.

Preferred

  • Independent clinical license (LCPC, LCMFT, LP, LSCSW) and/or participation in clinical supervision in accordance with a supervision plan established with the Kansas State.
  • State approved QMHP and Case Management Training from KDAD; if not, will be completed at first opportunity after employment.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office Software.
  • Certified in Basic CPR, First Aid, and/or MANDT; if not, will be required to certify at earliest opportunity.
  • Understanding of substance use issues and experience working with addictions.
  • Addictions licensure from the KS BSRB (LMAC, LAC, LCAC).
