Description of Work

Reporting to the Regional Security Coordinator this position is responsible for managing and supervising the transportation section assigned to the South Central Region office. Job responsibilities include:

  • Providing guidance and direction to ensure custody, security and control of offenders being transported between designated locations.
  • Ensuring incarcerated individuals are transported between various locations including jails, courts, prisons, and medical facilities while maintaining the security and well‑being of the offender throughout the transport process and ensuring Transportation Officers are fully aware of the approved level of independent decision‑making authority within established guidelines.
  • Recommending and implementing standard operating procedures for the transportation of offenders within the region.
  • Coordinating the transport of offenders within the Region to ensure timely and policy‑compliant transportation.
  • Overseeing officer activities and performance while ensuring custody, security and welfare of offenders is maintained.
  • Developing schedules to meet transportation requirements, implementing operational procedures and ensuring rules and regulations are followed according to policy.
  • Completing departmental reports within designated time frames; conducting daily inspections; reporting irregularities and initiating corrective action.
  • Ensuring shift coverage; implementing operational procedures and ensuring safety and security procedures are enforced.

Qualifications and Applicant Requirements

To be considered for a Correctional Sergeant III position, all applicants must:

  • Successfully complete medical and psychological evaluations.
  • Possess a valid driver’s license.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (KSAs) / Management Preferences are not required. Applicants who possess the following skills are preferred:

  • Knowledge of Facility Operations.
  • Knowledge of Prisons’ Policy and Procedures.

Minimum Education and Experience

  • High School or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and three years of experience as a Correctional Officer.
  • Or two years of experience as a Correctional Officer III.
  • Or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Career Notes

The salary grade for this position is NC09. State employees are encouraged to apply for positions of interest even if the salary grade is the same or lower than their current position. If selected, a new salary will be recalculated taking into consideration the quantity of relevant education and experience, funding availability, and internal equity. A pay increase may result.
