CCAC Technical Specialist for the Super Pollutants Accelerator in Mexico

Organizational context

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) hosts the Secretariat for the Climate and Clean Air Coalition (CCAC). The CCAC is a global partnership focused on reducing short-lived climate pollutants (SLCPs). This role supports Mexico's participation in the CCAC Super Pollutant Country Action Accelerator, aiming to integrate SLCP mitigation into national climate strategies and policies.

Job purpose

The Technical Specialist will provide scientific and technical leadership to integrate Short-Lived Climate Pollutant (SLCP) mitigation into Mexico's national climate commitments, including NDC3.0 implementation plans and the National Climate Change Strategy (ENACC/PECC). The role ensures that technical assistance projects are evidence-based, effective, and aligned with global best practices. The Specialist will deliver rigorous, science-based inputs to government counterparts and stakeholders, translating national priorities into actionable measures and strengthening Mexico's long-term capacity for SLCP mitigation across key sectors. Engagement with the CCAC Scientific Advisory Panel is also a key function to share knowledge and receive support.

Responsibilities

• Provide scientific and technical leadership to integrate SLCP mitigation (methane, black carbon, HFCs) into Mexico's national climate commitments (NDC3.0, ENACC/PECC) and sectoral policies.
• Deliver rigorous, science-based inputs to government and stakeholders, translating national priorities into actionable, high-quality measures.
• Ensure technical assistance projects are evidence-based, aligned with global best practices, and strengthen Mexico's capacity for SLCP mitigation.
• Review and provide scientific/methodological guidance for CCAC Technical Assistance Projects, ensuring alignment with government priorities and global best practices.
• Contribute to capacity-building materials and workshops for government officials on SLCP science and mitigation.
• Prepare technical briefs, policy notes, and science-based assessments to inform policy gaps and recommendations.
• Engage with the CCAC Scientific Advisory Panel for knowledge sharing and technical support.

Education

An advanced university degree (Master's or equivalent) in environmental sciences, climate policy, atmospheric science, or a related field is required. A first-level degree with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted. Fluency in Spanish is required, and fluency in English is highly desired.

Work experience

Minimum 4-7 years of experience in SLCP science, mitigation technologies, or climate mitigation, with a focus on methane, black carbon, or HFCs. Experience working on climate initiatives within government or international development partners, with familiarity in Mexican or Latin American climate policy processes, is highly desired. Experience with GHG inventory systems, NDC processes, and international climate agreements is an asset.

Skills

Deep understanding of SLCPs (methane, black carbon, HFCs), including emissions, mitigation technologies, and climate/air quality interactions. Excellent communication, presentation, analytical, and stakeholder engagement skills. Ability to translate scientific insights into policy briefs. Familiarity with climate change and air pollution issues in Mexico. Proficiency in Excel spreadsheets. Experience with national climate policy processes and international climate agreements is desirable.
