Summary
The Litigation Section of the Civil Division is seeking three attorneys to focus on tort matters. Attorneys will litigate cases in federal and state courts, including appeals, and may also work on employment and affirmative federal litigation based on interest and experience.
Job Duties
The Litigation Section defends King County and county employees in lawsuits alleging personal injury or civil rights violations under 42 USC 1983, Title VII, or the Washington Law Against Discrimination. Work includes providing legal advice to county departments and collaborating on complex, non‑tort litigation with other Civil Division attorneys. Attorneys develop multi‑layered strategies in areas where law is evolving, emphasizing motions practice, appeals, negotiation, policy, legislation, and litigation. Client interaction focuses on strategic advice and state/federal constitutional law issues.
The section is located at the Columbia Center in downtown Seattle. Attorneys work a hybrid schedule: telecommuting three days one week and two days the next, with in‑office work required on Wednesdays. New hires may work in‑office three days per week for six months.
Experience, Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills
- Enthusiasm, initiative, and ability to lead a team on complex matters.
- Outstanding analytical abilities.
- Excellent legal research and writing skills.
- Demonstrable commitment to equity and social justice, including ongoing cultural competence development.
- Desire to litigate in state and federal courts.
- Minimum of five years of civil litigation experience.
- Must be Washington State Bar qualified.
