Duties / Responsibilities
As a Civil Assistant U.S. Attorney (AUSA), you will represent the federal government in civil litigation in the District. Your primary focus will be affirmative civil enforcement matters such as violations of the False Claims Act, health care fraud, procurement fraud, Controlled Substances Act violations, and qui tam whistleblower cases. You will also handle a diverse defensive docket including immigration matters, torts, bankruptcy, environmental matters, employment discrimination, commercial litigation, and challenges to agency actions. Responsibilities include gathering evidence, taking depositions, preparing and answering interrogatories, negotiating settlements, engaging in motion practice, trying cases, and writing and arguing appeals.
Security Requirements
- Initial appointment conditioned upon a satisfactory preemployment adjudication, including fingerprint, credit, tax checks, and drug testing.
- Continued employment subject to a favorable adjudication of a background investigation.
Qualifications
- J.D. degree and active member of the bar in any U.S. jurisdiction.
- At least 1 year post-J.D. legal or other relevant experience.
- United States citizenship.
- Experience with the False Claims Act and other civil enforcement matters.
- Excellent research and writing skills, superior oral communication, and ability to manage cases independently.
Requirements
- Must reside in the District of Vermont or within 25 miles thereof.
- Must be a U.S. citizen and registered for Selective Service if applicable.
Salary Information
Assistant United States Attorney pay ranges from $78,315 to $197,100, including 19.45% locality pay.
