Overview

The United States Attorney's Office (USAO) for the Southern District of Georgia seeks an Assistant United States Attorney (AUSA) to serve in the Civil Division's defensive section in either Savannah or Augusta. The AUSA will represent the U.S. Government and its agencies in civil litigation, including tort, employment discrimination, constitutional, and immigration‑related matters.

Responsibilities

  • Represent the United States and its agency clients in civil cases filed against the United States.
  • Gather information and evidence from government agencies.
  • Engage in motion practice and oral argument.
  • Take and defend depositions.
  • Prepare and respond to written discovery.
  • Negotiate settlements and prepare cases for trial.
  • Try cases and brief and argue appeals.

Qualifications

  • United States citizenship.
  • J.D. degree (or equivalent) and an active membership in any U.S. jurisdictional bar by the entry‑on‑duty date.
  • Experience or willingness to learn independently across varied legal subject areas.
  • Residency in the district to which appointed or within 25 miles thereof.
  • Compliance with all conditions of employment, including background adjudication, Selective Service registration, and drug testing.

Salary and Benefits

  • Pay range: $65,563 to $171,487 (basic pay; locality pay not included).
