About The Job
Safety & Health Manager
The Safety & Health Manager is responsible for developing, implementing, and maintaining safety, health, and risk management policies, procedures, and programs. As a key business partner, this role works closely with senior management, area, facility, and department management to maintain a safe and healthy work environment. The position ensures compliance with all applicable federal, state, and local regulations and Vulcan Materials Safety & Health policies. The manager directs resources to support health, safety, and risk management programs and fosters a culture that prioritizes effective safety practices while balancing cost.
What You’ll Do
- Culture Leadership: Provide leadership in the Division’s Safety and Health culture by working closely with the management group and managing safety/health representatives.
- Trend Analysis: Analyze and determine trends in accidents; design and implement corrective measures when necessary.
- Data Management: Consolidate and maintain all safety, health, and claims reports and analytical data to provide appropriate documentation and dissemination.
- Strategic Strategy: Develop and direct the implementation of strategies to resolve health and safety issues, control risk and liability, and promote effective workplace behaviors.
- Policy Review: Review internal safety policies and practices to ensure they are up to date.
- Operational Collaboration: Work jointly with operations management to improve efficiencies, control costs, and influence employee attitudes toward safety.
- Program Innovation: Develop and maintain a proactive safety program with innovative ideas to motivate the workforce and management.
- Risk Protection: Develop programs, procedures, and training initiatives to protect individuals, property, and the company’s interests.
- Training Support: Participate in safety training and meetings in support of other safety/health managers, representatives, and operations/sales/staff personnel.
- Regulatory Liaison: Serve as liaison with regulatory agencies, including MSHA, OSHA, and D.O.T.; represent the Company in dealings with federal, state, and local agencies.
- Communication & Claims: Maintain open lines of communication with state/federal agencies, adjusters, lawyers, doctors, hospitals, and managers to manage regulatory issues and claims.
- Workforce Development: Direct the design and implementation of employee training programs to ensure a high-quality and safe workforce.
- Liability Protection: Develop, in cooperation with corporate Risk Management, programs for liability protection related to industrial health and safety.
- Incident Investigation: Establish a process for investigating all accidents, incidents, and injuries and implement corrective action plans.
- Auditing: Direct and conduct facility audits to evaluate the effectiveness of management systems for risk identification and accident prevention.
- Operational Assessment: Evaluate accident potential in new/existing operations and conduct relevant assessments for acquisitions and divestitures.
- Industrial Hygiene: Manage the Division’s industrial hygiene program in conjunction with the Company’s program.
- Talent Management: Manage activities of the Division’s Safety and Health Area Representatives and motivate high-level talent.
- Continuous Improvement: Monitor adherence to and measure the effectiveness of programs to ensure compliance and keep abreast of developments.
- Physical Environments: Perform other duties as assigned.
Physical Requirements & Travel
- Physicality: Ability to sit for extended periods; walk, climb stairs, catwalks, and ladders; exposure to noise, heights, and underground conditions in temperature extremes.
- Environment: Work in and around construction environments.
- Travel: Must be able to drive for extended periods, including one‑day and overnight travel throughout the division by automobile and plane; approximate travel time 30%.
Skills You’ll Need
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in Safety, Industrial Hygiene, Occupational Health, Engineering, or a similar technical area is preferred. An advanced degree is desirable.
- Certification: Certified Safety Professional (C.S.P.) or Certified Industrial Hygienist (C.I.H.) is preferred.
- Regulatory Knowledge: Knowledge of MSHA, OSHA, D.O.T., and workers' compensation laws.
- Operational Knowledge: Knowledge of contracting, rock and sand, asphalt, ready‑mix batch plant, fleet, and landfill operations.
- Communication: Excellent interpersonal and communication skills for management interaction and staff training.
- Leadership: Skills that positively influence safe work behaviors; ability to mentor, train, and coach.
- Organizational Skills: Excellent organization and detail orientation to achieve results.
- Problem Solving: Skilled in accident investigations, root‑cause analysis, and follow‑up.
- Interfacing: Ability to interact effectively with all levels of company personnel and outside professionals.
- Independence: Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and balance multiple tasks in high‑stress environments.

The salary range for this role is $94,080 - $141,120 annual salary, not inclusive of discretionary bonus or equity.
