Transport is at the core of modern society. Imagine using your expertise to shape sustainable transport and infrastructure solutions for the future. If you seek to make a difference on a global scale, working with next‑gen technologies and the sharpest collaborative teams, then we could be a perfect match.

At Powertrain Engineering Lyon, you will contribute directly to the development of our next‑generation electric drive lines (e‑Axle). As an apprentice in the Fluids Systems team, you will be at the heart of the transition to Battery Electric Vehicles (BEV).

Responsibilities

  • Lubricant Specification & Strategy: You will drive the development of a common lubricant specification for all sub‑systems of Volvo drivelines platform. This involves creating technical requirements, analyzing vehicle data, and conducting market analysis of existing lubricants. You will also coordinate characterization tests in collaboration with a major lubricant manufacturer.
  • System Testing & Failure Analysis: You will support the development of a new test bench dedicated to e‑Axle lubrication system components. Your goal will be to recreate field failure modes and define advanced analysis to complement existing testing capabilities.
  • Advanced Field Monitoring: You will improve our oil analysis tools for BEV monitoring. You will be responsible for designing a standardized aftermarket sampling kit, including unified instructions for the entire Volvo Group, to ensure high‑quality field data collection. These activities may be further supported by the development of a digital application aimed at simplifying daily work for experts and field engineers.

Your Future Team

  • You will join the Fluids Systems Team, a group of engineers responsible for lubrication and cooling systems for e‑axle and medium duty engine platforms. We work in an international environment across several Volvo sites and suppliers, with a strong culture of collaboration, autonomy, and technical excellence.

Who are you?

  • Currently pursuing an engineering degree or master’s degree (equivalent to BAC+4/+5)
  • Strong foundation in mechanics and/or chemistry, particularly in fluid formulation, materials chemistry, or related disciplines.
  • Experience in data analysis using Excel, MATLAB, Python, or similar tools, and a strong interest in the practical application of AI and machine learning techniques.
  • Ability to work independently, take initiative, and drive projects through to completion.
  • Fluency in both French and English, enabling effective collaboration in an international environment.

Key Success Factors

  • You are curious, proactive, and results‑oriented. You combine strong analytical skills with a hands‑on approach and enjoy experimental work as much as theoretical investigation.

What’s in it for you?

  • A team that values people, wellbeing, and technical development.
  • A flexible and supportive environment, with access to experts in Lyon and across Volvo’s global network.
  • A unique opportunity to develop deep expertise in lubricants, complex cross‑domain problem solving, and AI‑driven modelling.
  • Access to Volvo’s Lyon site services, modern laboratories, and a multicultural working environment.
