Overview

Astroscale France is looking for an AIV Engineer – Computer Vision & GNC to support the growth of our Toulouse office. This role will focus on computer vision (CV) algorithm validation and guidance navigation control (GNC) hardware‑in‑the‑loop testing, including the design and operation of dedicated laboratories. Strong collaboration with the GNC and CV teams is required.

Responsibilities

Lab Design & Infrastructure

  • Design and implement a state‑of‑the‑art computer vision and GNC testing laboratory, including hardware, software, and simulation environments.
  • Define requirements for lab equipment (cameras, lighting, motion platforms, robotic arms, GNSS simulators).
  • Ensure scalability, modularity, and compliance with safety and quality standards.

Test Planning & Execution

  • Develop and execute test plans for computer vision algorithms (e.g., object detection, tracking) and GNC systems.
  • Define validation strategies, KPIs, and acceptance criteria for vision‑based navigation and control systems.
  • Coordinate integration and test campaigns across processor‑in‑the‑loop (PIL) and hardware‑in‑the‑loop (HIL).
  • Collaborate with other stakeholders (Systems, CV, and GNC teams) to ensure end‑to‑end system validation.
  • Oversee data acquisition, annotation, and analysis pipelines for vision and GNC testing.
  • Ensure traceability and reproducibility of test results through robust documentation and version control.
  • Interface with project managers, product owners, and external partners to align lab capabilities with program needs.

Wider Responsibilities

  • Attend and support reviews with potential partners or clients.
  • Support knowledge transfer from Astroscale teams globally.

Experience & Qualifications

Essential Skills

  • Master’s degree in computer science, computer vision, robotics, GNC, or a related engineering/science discipline.
  • 5 years of experience in robotics or computer vision algorithm validation.
  • Experience implementing lab experiments.
  • Proactive and self‑managing, able to plan and lead responsibilities while collaborating within a close‑knit team.
  • Excellent problem‑solving skills and attention to detail.
  • Fluent in French and English.
  • Eligible and registered to work within Europe.
  • Eligible to gain security clearance in France.

Desirable Skills

  • Experience in the space sector.
  • Experience developing robotics test platforms.
  • Familiarity with ROS protocols.
  • Knowledge of scripting languages.
  • Camera calibration and image acquisition techniques.
  • Calibration of robotic joints and actuators.
  • Sensor–actuator synchronization and timing management.
  • Motion tracking and ground‑truth acquisition methods.
  • Motion planning and control (kinematics, trajectory generation).
  • Familiarity with simulation environments (Gazebo, IsaacSim, etc.).
  • Experience with real‑time systems and hardware‑in‑the‑loop setups.

Location

Astroscale France (Toulouse), with some hybrid working.
