Accounts Receivable Specialist

Hospice of Southern Illinois is a not‑for‑profit, community‑based hospice that provides end‑of‑life care to patients in the Southern Illinois and St. Louis Metro‑East communities. The position is located at the Belleville, IL Administration Office at 305 South Illinois Street. It is a full‑time, non‑exempt role (40 hours per week).

Position Summary

  • Position Summary: Effectively interacts with finance, admissions, medical records, and clinical departments. Requires teamwork, strong analytical and problem‑solving skills, and a working knowledge of Medicare, Medicaid, and commercial insurance plans.
  • Pay: $23.47 hourly. 80 hours bi‑weekly.
  • Schedule: Monday – Friday, 8:30 AM – 5:00 PM.
  • Location: 305 South Illinois Street, Belleville, IL 62220 (not remote).
  • Certified by the State of Illinois and compliant with the Illinois Equal Pay Act.

Position Requirements

A. Education

  • Graduate of an accredited high school.
  • Associate degree from an accredited college preferred.

B. Experience

  • Three (3) years accounts receivable experience preferred.
  • Knowledge of Medicare, Medicaid, and medical insurance billing.

C. Other Qualifications

  • Strong emphasis on Medicare and Medicaid billing experience.
  • Ability to calculate, post, and manage outstanding receivables.
  • High degree of accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Independent worker who can prioritize multiple tasks.
  • Accurate recording and transmission of detailed information.
  • Understanding of claim submission requirements.
  • Ability to work under firm deadlines.
  • Capability to make timely, independent decisions.
  • Physical requirements: repetitive tasks, sedentary work, manual dexterity, hearing alarms and telephone, flexibility to bend at the knee and stoop to file records, vision clarity >20 inches and <20 feet.
  • Working conditions: 100% time in an air‑conditioned environment with variable humidity and noise levels.

Essential Functions

  • Understand patient billing in Suncoast and Great Plains, including reconciliation.
  • File claims electronically and manually in a timely manner.
  • Post payments and adjustments accurately to patient accounts.
  • Complete general ledger journal entries with accuracy and timeliness.
  • Manage all aspects of claim filing, correcting errors and resubmissions.
  • Maintain knowledge of Medicare and Medicaid programs and regulations.
  • Assist with Accounts Receivable review, including identifying and resolving claim issues.
  • Understand authorization processes for all payor sources.
  • Comprehend Nursing Home Medicaid Room and Board billing procedures.
  • Bill Medicare and Direct Pay, including deductibles and co‑pays, interacting with patients or families when necessary.
  • Enter and manage claims in DDE, Medi, Medicaid HMO portals, and Claims Management Pro.
  • Understand benefit periods, certification/recertification processes, and submit re‑certifications.
  • Create Medicare Notice of Elections (81As) and terminations (81Bs) in Suncoast Solutions, CMS Direct Data Entry, and accompanying Medicaid notices.
  • Apply basic accounting principles accurately.
  • Use telephone system and call/message forwarding protocol.
  • Demonstrate problem‑solving and propose improvements to work processes.
  • Maintain high attention to detail and verify work.
  • Work cooperatively in a team environment to meet deadlines, goals, and objectives.
  • Plan and organize information using systems, set priorities, and manage time realistically.
  • Communicate clearly, articulating thoughts and ideas.
  • Show reliability by following through on projects and job tasks.
  • Exemplify Hospice of Southern Illinois core values in daily interactions.
  • Accurately document timesheets.
  • Manage Paid Time Off and submit requests timely.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.
