Amazon is seeking a detail‑oriented individual to join our Data Center Engineering Operations Team. As the Data Center Chief Engineer (CE), you will ensure that all electrical, mechanical, and fire/life safety equipment within the data center operates at peak efficiency, maintaining 100% availability for mission‑critical servers. You will serve as an expert technical resource, reporting to a site’s Data Center Facility Manager and interacting with onsite Engineering Operations Technicians (EOT) and third‑party vendors.

You will manage small‑to‑medium impacting projects from conception to completion, collaborate with internal and external support groups, drive innovation and resiliency, and reduce operational costs.

Key job responsibilities

• Setting and maintaining the highest standards for safety and promoting a world‑class safety culture.
• Driving continuous improvement efforts on infrastructure through standardisation of procedures and policies.
• Working closely with the Operations Principal Engineer, site Chief Engineers and broader operations teams to streamline maintenance procedures and implement standardized risk assessment protocols.
• Enabling the operations organisation to deliver 100% uptime on all customer‑supporting infrastructure.
• Training and mentoring technical operations staff on the execution of all corrective and preventative maintenance activities on mission‑critical infrastructure.
• Collaborating effectively with 3rd‑party providers to deliver operational excellence for all AWS customers.
• Innovating and delivering a portfolio of strategic projects on critical infrastructure.
• Delivering build‑out and retrofit of facility infrastructure through a deep technical review and execution of construction & commissioning activities by contracted providers.
• Ensuring organisational capability to react & respond appropriately to any potential customer‑impacting event on any component of electrical or mechanical infrastructure.
• Elevating capabilities of site chief engineers and EOTs, establishing training requirements, and coordinating operational readiness testing (LLT, MOT, CCT), LSE/CSE drill & CST programs.

Basic Qualifications

• 15+ years’ experience in a high‑volume mission‑critical operational environment (e.g., data centre, healthcare, high technology manufacturing, large scale production, aviation maintenance) preferably 7x24x365 operational experience & responsibilities.
• 10+ years’ relevant leadership experience in an engineering/technical environment for medium to large scale engineering operations (preferably electrical and mechanical).
• Proven experience of strategic project/portfolio management delivering medium and large‑scale technical projects.
• Ability to deliver results in highly complex, technically challenging situations with cross‑team collaboration.
• Strong IT skills; experience and knowledge of MS Office suite.
• Strong verbal & written communication skills at all levels within the organization, with excellent English language skills.
• History of working with geographically separated teams to deliver speedy solutions that can be deployed across multiple geographies.

Preferred Qualifications

• Associates or Bachelors in applicable engineering field or mechanical or electrical trades.
• Operating engineering licenses such as DC II, DC III, or equivalent.
• Stationary Engineering or Building Engineering License.
• Electrical or mechanical Journeyman License.
• CFC license.
• NFPA 70E certification.
• Strong verbal & written communication skills.
• Solid leadership and organisational skills.
• Meets/exceeds Amazon’s leadership principles requirements for this role.
• Meets/exceeds Amazon’s functional/technical depth and complexity.
